The Art of Travel: Going Solo

Happy Monday, all. Did you enjoy the weekend? I spent some time doing French garden chair studies in prep for a larger painting that's been on my mind. This guy above, spotted on a solitary walk through the Tuileries reminded me of how much I enjoyed being alone in Paris last year. Do you do much solo travel? Would you try a trip on your own?

Being alone in Paris surprised me - the expected loneliness never crept in. To be able to wander, to take photos until fingers turned blue, to set my own schedule, revealed a city never before seen.
Of course, traveling in pairs brings different rewards. Another Paris altogether will be found the next time I visit with Mr. H. And it's always nice to be part of a pair. But there's something about solitude that paints an unexpectedly happy picture.

How about you? Do you enjoy traveling by yourself, or would you always prefer to have company?

XO

  1. I have only been on my own overseas once - and only for one evening as my friend was delayed in joining me. It was in Florence and the magic of discovering it on my own is something I hope to never forget!

    1. Florence would be a wonderful city to wander alone, Heather! I think you would make a very good solo traveler, you have such a talent for observation. XOXO

  2. Yes, I have always been adventurous and often traveling solo can be the perfect time to get lost without getting blamed for not knowing the way. I do savor our family trips but travel solo is something all together different. Traveling solo and then meeting up with a friend is also a fun thing to look forward to.
Your lovely solo green chair says it all.

  3. Dearest Jeanne, I do enjoy traveling alone. I did for one month in France, and was I ever in my element. It gives me time to take more time to inspect something that catches my eye, to THINK and to go where I please. My husband however is a great traveling companion, and after my whole month alone, he joined me. We had so much fun, and he too is a pensive traveler. Gorgeous chairs both in Paris and on your canvas! Anita

    1. Thanks Anita. How lovely to have a whole month in France to yourself. But yes, I think going it alone makes us appreciate our favorite travel companions even more when they join us.

      Have a lovely week! XOXO

  5. One of my favourite parks, Jeanne...and your chairs are wonderful...I haven't travelled on my own for years...I'm not so sure I would enjoy it although I'm very happy in my own company but when you're travelling it's always so lovely to share things, isn't it? xx

  8. Funny I was just having this conversation with a friend a few weeks ago who has traveled many times solo. I have only done small trips like to Boston but have to say I think I would do it in a heartbeat and probably rally enjoy it. I like my own company and am quite independent- two prerequisites to having a successful solo trip, I think:)
It would also depend to where...anywhere in Europe or a place that involves lots of sight seeing, I would be more inclined to go solo to. Love your drawing!

  9. As twins, we're naturally part of a pair so travelling or doing anything alone is a bit outside our comfort zones. One of us took off to live in Japan while the other one stayed back in Paris and we spent quite a lot of time comparing our time alone... Both time alone and in pairs have benefits.

  11. I've always dreamed of travelling solo..no one to wait on, no one to wait on you...the beauty of just waking up, eating what you want, roaming where you may...there's just a freedom to it that's so appealing!

If you have a moment, would love to get your thoughts on my latest design!

  13. Oops! ..trying again. Beautiful illustration Jeanne:) On traveling SOLO, although I do enjoy time spent alone, my preference is to have a friend with me (husband:). I guess I'm not the most independent person;) Hope you are enjoying your week so far!

  14. I love, love, love this illustration! Would you believe I have never traveled solo? I guess I should consider myself fortunate in that respect BUT it is an experience I would like to have at some point. I think if it was a city I know really well like Paris, I could get lost by myself for hours! Hope you are having a wonderful week, Jeanne! xoxo

  15. I remember this trip you took!! I must admit, I have hardly been anywhere by myself that wasn't necessary for work. In fact, I can't think of a single trip. Which is funny, because the one place I see myself traveling alone…is Seattle. More on that soon! :)

  16. I love solo travel, I just got back from 10 days alone in France, thankfully I have made friends there, so I don't get too lonely, though it did creep in a few times. It is so nice to be completely on your own schedule, and for me, if I am alone I can speak much more French. Love the green chairs, so inviting...
