New Year, New Project: A Sketch a Day

Happy Friday, everyone! We made it through the first full week of 2015! How was it? How are those resolutions? New practices? Goals?

One new thing I'm super excited to do this year is a "Painting a Day" project. I'll be attempting a 30-minute sketch each day, and decided to find inspiration for the paintings on Instagram.

 DAY 1 - @pvedesign

Patricia van Essche of PVE Design has been an incredible inspiration for so long - a true champion since back in the days spent dreaming of quitting my job and becoming a full-time artist. When she wrote about her goal of tackling a 30 minute painting a each day in 2015, it hit just the right note.

 DAY 2 - @zhush

Patricia was inspired by the amazingly talented Jennifer from August Wren, who painted 365 days last year. Jennifer said that keeping a sketchbook for the year was one of the most rewarding things she's ever done. (You can read about it here). I love her work, it has such a fun energy.

 DAY 3 - @vickiarcher

Starting out last Monday morning, I couldn't decide what to sketch. Fidgeting a bit, picked up my iPhone and scrolled through Instagram - favorite form of procrastination - and there it was.... photo after photo of inspiration in my hand. My very own twist on the project - sketch a favorite Instagram image each day. It seemed only fitting to begin with PVE's gorgeous amaryllis post from that morning - a blooming start.

Five days in now and loving it. Of course, there are still 355 days left. I'm a little unsure how this will unfold, we travel a lot, so it could get complicated. So far, so good, though. There are few a specific goals in mind... be spontaneous, be fast (have to be with 30 minutes), don't be afraid to make mistakes... and let them be when they happen, let the paint flow. I'm hoping to find a freshness and lightness that carries over to my other work.

Thanks so much to everyone who already chimed in with support and kind comments on Instagram - you can follow along there, I'll post daily at @idreamofjeanne and will keep you updated here on the blog, too, from time to time.

So here's to a new year, to fresh starts and fresh paint! Happy weekend, friends! XOXO

  1. Dear, dear Jeanne,

What a happy "museum" of spring you have going here! I NEED IT! We have such frigid temps here right now, with blizzard like conditions. Your shares today are an inspiration.

I so know what you are saying about quitting a full-time job to become a full-time artist. I know you can do it! YOu have such talent, and like me, who wants to be a poet, I am reading the BEST in the business. I am filling my heart and head with their styles and ways with words. And it becomes habit. You already have the skills, the style, the love. Your plan for the year is PERFECT.

    HAPPY PAINTING! Anita

    1. Anita, you are so sweet. The great thing is that I DID quit my job - almost three years ago (how time flies) and have been happily working as an artist and illustrator ever since. Lucky me! But the thing is, I realize now, I was as much an artist when I painted evenings and weekends as I am now when I am fortunate enough to paint every day. Point being that you, my friend, are already a poet - I can see it every time I experience your lovely posts. (I say experience because your poems are as much about image as they are about words.)

Here's to living in the moment, being who we are and doing what we love! XO

  2. Wow just incredible...I am inspired. I am happy to see your beautiful talent being put to good use....and so look forward to each of your exquisite works of art, that would make some book! Just a thought:)
Both you and Patricia are incredibly talented......if I had that kind of talent I would be painting away! Enjoy your day and good luck tackling the rest of the 355 days.

    1. Thanks, lovely Tina. You are such a wonderful cheerleader and I always appreciate your support. I was actually thinking about self-publishing a book for myself, family and friends when the year is over. Could be a good memory of 2015!

Hope that you are staying warm and enjoying the beauty of the snow! Happy weekend! XOXO

  3. Jeanne,
I have tears running down my cheeks - this makes me so happy to know that we as artists can inspire each other with each and every brush stroke. Like a pebble, casting ripples and positive energy!
Wishing you all the best and believing in yourself.
I saw Jennifer yesterday and I am sending you a little love from her.

    1. Ah, Patricia, you are just the best. I can't thank you enough for all of your generous support. I'm so happy and grateful that we can inspire each other as artists and friends.

Thanks for sending Jennifer a little love, she is fantastic. What a wonderful pebble of inspiration she threw when she started her sketchbook last year!

Here's to believing, friendship and painting a beautiful life in 2015!
