Picking Peonies

Admittedly, even thinking about peonies in early April feels a bit like cheating on the lovely tulips, daffodils and hyacinths that are having their moment right now. But apparently it's time to pick the peony starts that will bloom in the garden later as spring turns into summer, and what an amazing abundance of beauty there is to choose from. There are hours, days to be spent pouring over the photos and choosing a favorite variety or two...or 10.

Peony's Envy Flower Farm is a fantastic resource if you are dreaming of a garden of these amazing blooms. From planting recommendations to garden plans to blooming sequences, there's everything else you'd like to know before plotting your flower beds - not to mention glorious eye candy.

Speaking of eye candy, this lovely spread in Kinfolk Magazine accompanies tips for growing perfect peonies from the people behind Salem, Oregon's, Adelman Peony Gardens and its 15 acres of award-winning peonyliciousness.

Always in mind when thoughts drift to peonies are the prettiest pink ones spied in Monet's garden in Giverny on an en plein air painting adventure years and years ago...

But even narrowing the palette to palest to mid pinks, there are just too many to choose from! So please tell me, which of these lovelies would you pick if you were planning a peony garden?

1/Peppermint, 2/Jade Dragon Five Stars, 3/Garden Princess, 4/Austen's Pride 5/Pure Joy, 6/Pink Charmer, 7/Bessie 8/Sorbet, 9/Gay Paree, 10/Morning Dew, 11/Exotic Sunflower, 12/Kansas

Happy Weekend, everyone! What flowers are blooming in your neighborhood right now... and which are you looking forward to the most?

XOXO

  12. Oh how I wish I could grow peonies. I've been told Monrovia nursery created a hybrid that will grow without a frost, but I'm not so sure. They are such beautiful flowers. I've resigned myself to planting roses that mimic a peony blossom.

  13. Well, you know I love tulips, but I ADORE peonies and I inherited 4 large bushes when we moved into this house. They had to be transplanted to the front and I wasn't sure how they would do, but they are a sturdy stock and they continue to bloom with ease.

What a gorgeous inspiration….I'm still waiting on everything to bloom here. We look a bit bare still, but soon….very soon!

    xoxo Elizabeth
