Light In The Storm

The week is starting with a little gray, gloominess here, and I'm thinking about my friends in the Northeast who are facing some seriously stormy weather. I'd like to send them a few warm, glowing thoughts...

No matter how dark it gets out there, I'm hoping you all get a little bit of glow this Halloween week. Stay safe! XO

Have A Glamorous Weekend!

As the temperatures drop, I just want to snuggle up in deep, spicy, tomato hues. It may be cooling down, but that doesn't mean we can't be glamorous - even if we're just throwing something over our yoga gear and heading for the studio.

A little swing, a little shape. A lot of glam.

This McQueen is a dream:

JCrew looks ripe for the picking:

Short more your style? Rag & Bone has you covered.

Happy weekend, all! Anything glamorous planned?

Doing My Homework: Luxembourg Lion Study

Happy Wednesday, everyone! How's your week so far? No complaints here!  You may have noticed I've been posting a bit less frequently of late. I'm taking a few classes and workshops, which means regular homework assignments. Do you remember the last time you had homework? Anyway, sketchbooks, collages, and watercolor studies, along with a few client projects, are taking a chunk out of blog time.

Messy desk, clear head?

One assignment this week was to make a monochrome value study of a subject we'd like to paint. The idea is that taking time to focus on the just the relative lights and darks in an initial sketch helps create clarity around how the final painting should come together.

For my subject matter I chose one of the lions that stalked me around Paris last spring...

I'd love spend a bit more time with him, so hope one of our assignments for next week is to take what we've learned from our studies and apply it to a final painting.

I'm also hoping to return to a more normal posting schedule in a few weeks!

What's keeping you busy these days?

The Last Dahlias

When I went out looking for flowers for Book Club, a few buckets of dahlias still dotted the stalls of Pike Place Market.  But just a week later, I needed a few more blooms for our dining room table and there were none left to be found.

It seems like these white dahlias were the last of the season. Pale ghosts of the flowers from the warmer months.

I'll miss the hydrangeas, the roses and the dahlias now that even our Indian summer has fully given way to the heart of autumn. But I'm ready to make way for narcissus, hot house tulips, and plenty of winter greens.

What flowers do you like to bring home once we've seen the last of the autumn blooms?

Etsy Finds: Fall Photo Favorites

"Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn."-Elizabeth Lawrence

Happy Friday, all! What are you up to this weekend? Our forecast looks a little heavy on the rain, but I'm hoping the sun pops out long enough for a walk to the nearby Washington Park Arboretum to watch the leaves turn. In the meantime, I took a little walk through Etsy to see if I could find a bit autumn. Sure enough, fall looks glorious there...

Have a beautiful weekend! Hope you find some time to sit still and watch the leaves turn. XO

Color Story: Blue Door + Orange Pumpkins

Hi all, how's the week going?  It's been a bit crazy at my house, but  I realized I owe you all an invitation to come by and see the new paint job on our front door! Come see:

What do you think?

And do you like the receiving line of pumpkins waiting to say hello?

They've hopped into the garden urns, too.

Orange you glad it's fall? Any pumpkins at your house yet?

Five Fall Favorites

Happy Monday, all! How are you? In Seattle, the not-so-nice side of fall has arrived with a vengeance. After weeks and weeks of bright, sunny days, we've suddenly gone gray, damp and soggy. It's enough to make you want to pull the covers over your head and stay there until the sun comes back out (perhaps in June sometime).

Since that's not an option, instead I'm looking on the bright side and reminding myself what I love about autumn.

Rainy grays aside, here are five of my favorite things about fall:

Falling Leaves
A color riot of golds, oranges and reds over head, the way they crunch underfoot, and that lovely earthy smell...I can't get enough autumn leaves, both outdoors and in.

Wearing Fall Colors
Whether they echo those bright yellow leaves, the pumpkins on my doorstep or the season's more subdued shades, I love wrapping up in autumn's best hues.

As the days grow shorter and the evenings darker, the flickering glow of candles brightens my outlook.

Fall Flavors
Warm hearty soups and savory squashes make cooking at home much more appealing than going out. Which ties in nicely with my most favorite thing about fall...

Hunkering Down
It may be pouring down rain, but who cares if you're curled up inside with a terrific book? Add a cozy chair, a warm blanket and cracking fire and who would ever want to leave the house?

Rain or shine, I hope you're loving this gorgeous season!

What are your favorite things about fall?
