House Project: The Blue Door

"Why make so much of a fragmentary blue..." -Robert Frost

When we bought our home nearly five years ago, the front door wore a coat of white paint. And it's been white ever since - if you don't count a few black streaks left by an over-zealous newspaper boy. But on a trip to Nantucket, this pretty blue entrance got me thinking...  a little hit of blue paint in just the right spot might be the perfect update for our own weathered gray shingled home - like how the perfect shade of lipstick can change your whole look.

Since then I've looked at a lot of doors...

And played with a lot of blue paint.

I wanted a shade that would look like the Puget Sound on a day when the clouds and the sun are hanging out together.

We landed on Benjamin Moore Mineral Alloy  -  A sea-on-a-partly-sunny-day kind of shade, I think.

I'll post a photo of the results soon!

What color is your front door?

  1. Go for it Jenni you'll love it. The husband just painted our front door an autumn orange and I love it. Unfortunately that led him to doing the whole surround of the door and the work is ongoing but it's looking great!

  2. Love this idea Jeanne, I love your shade (and your description). We have a green door and green trim, and it really kills me when it chips because it reveals the perfect shade of French blue (which I would prefer to the green). Oh well, someday I'll bite the bullet and have it redone.

  4. Love the rich, bright blues on the French doors. There is something so magnificent about that color.

  6. Beautiful post.
My front door is BM Brewster gray but I am thinking of a new color - I would love a charcoal or black door....
    or perhaps a deep indigo.
I do love a pretty blue door.

  7. Definitely go for it, especially if it evokes the beauty of the Sound! Our door is black as you may recall from your brief visit to our front door :) but I sometimes wonder if it's too severe - I might just have to paint it an accent color eventually - love your choice!

  8. you can't go wrong with a greyed down blue. i love these images you posted as inspiration! now i am going to be on the lookout for blue doors.

our doors are walnut and stained. our shutters have been the dilemma. we have had several shades of blue-grey that didn't do it. so they are putty at the moment.

    smiles.

  9. My front door is red but I love the blue gray color you chose! Did you know that in many cultures blue is a protective color? Blue doors are said to protect a home and blue ceilings ward off ghosts and evil spirits. See more in my blog post here! http://whatfeedsmysoul-aha.blogspot.com/2012/07/heavenly-blue.html
