What's Your Coffee Table Style?

You know those homes you walk into and everything is perfectly done and decorated? Ours is NOT that house. I've mentioned my decision making impairment before. So in spite of the efforts of one interior designer friend who could Coveteur-worthy a cardboard box and another who owns the loveliest interior store in the Universe, after four years, our home is finished only in patches. A breakfast nook here, a powder room there. It's kind of sad, actually.

The inspiration- a white square table, like the one in Helen Schifter's Hamptons home

But this week, I'm feeling rather proud of myself because I pulled the trigger on a coffee table! That may not sound earth-shattering, but to the Queen of Indecision, it's actually a big deal - and it sits in the center of our "great room" (kitchen/breakfast nook/family room/my home "office") which is the heartbeat of the house and place where we spend the most time. So it's a pretty important piece.

It won't arrive for awhile, but in the mean time I have the fun of thinking about how I want to style it. I have a theory that there are two kinds of coffee table people. The minimalists who can stop at a neatly stacked pile or two of books and a vase of flowers. Perhaps a tray or a perfectly positioned candle or objet d'art.

And then there are the eclectics, who must have all of the above and then some... in multiples.

Can you guess which category I fall into? I'll post some photos when I'm finished so you can see!

  1. Congratulations on your new purchase Jeanne. I'm a minimalist when it comes to our coffee table because I don't like clutter. I can't wait to see your new table and I'll bet you're like me.

  2. steps right? Congrats on your purchase...look forward to seeing it and then what you do with it. I am more of a minimalist, don't like too much, of course a stack or two of books and an object or two...and thats about it. I don't like when there is too much clutter........but I can't say I havent' seen some beautiful coffee tables filled wtih all kinds of pretties...just not my own personal style. Fun post!

  3. Jeanne,
Congrats on your choice. Love that first image.

We inherited a coffee table that came with our home...well the previous owners had left it and we loved it for many years until we finally bought one.
I love it, it is oval and has a mirrored bottom. It is in front of our fire-place and I love love love it.

I also love ottomans in place of coffee tables.

  4. my ideal coffee table is rustic, overscaled, and minimal. on a search right now as new upholstered living room furniture just arrived last weekend and looks ridiculous without anything else. i need a side table and lamps too! loved a trunk at restoration hardware but wasn't loving the price. kind of hoping it gets reduced so i don't have to shop.

  5. I wouldn't be able to sleep if I had as much on my coffee table as the last ones. I think my tray, books and vase is stacking it heavily, lol. I do add a lot to shelves though.
I know that you are excited.
    Happy Thursday.

  6. Mine is totally empty as we eat at it while sitting on the floor very often! And it is so beautiful as it is--hand-painted with a tiger hunting scene brought back from Jaipur--that it needs nothing else! :)

    As Tina said, baby steps...

  7. Oh Heather, your coffee table sounds gorgeous. I would love to see a post on that - I'm sure there's a great story behind it, right? XO

  8. the older I get...the more minimalist I become. I love to do tablecapes, arranging mementos, flowers and such...but I think I'm just too tired to dust and clean I suppose

Hope you'll share your new table with us when it arrives!

  9. I think I have to replace my coffee table with a new one. I love the second image.
