Date Night Idea: An Evening In Roma

Happy Friday, everyone! You may not be able to hop a plane to Rome at a moments notice tonight, but as a feasible alternative, might I suggest the next best thing: a few hours in the Eternal City by way of Woody Allen's delightfully silly To Rome with Love.

Several story lines co-exist together, layered over each other like the city itself, where several civilizations are often present, one on top of the other, on the same little patch of soil.

An affectionate love letter to a complex city, each of the plot lines bring to life all that is endearing and frustrating about the Italian capital - the overwhelming history, the twists and turns of its streets, piazzas and roundabouts, a fascination with celebrity (the tag Paparazzi originates here), the baggage of being so fiercely associated with passionate romance, not to mention the ridiculously sublime beauty of the place.

It's a delicious little aperitivo of a film and as sweet and fleeting as gelato melting in the Campo de Fiori sun. So start your evening with a Processeco or Negroni and end at your favorite gelateria. A date night with all that's wonderful about Rome, without the jet lag.

What's your favorite date night idea?

  1. If the movie is anything like Midnight in Paris, we'll be seeing it soon... Negroni in hand! Looking forward to a couple of date nights on the beach next week, watching the sun set on the National Seashore at the Cape. Happy weekend, Jeanne!

  2. What a lovely post! I want to see that movie!
Have you been to Provence via the movie "A Good Year"? This is my FAVORITE movie and so beautiful.
My husband loves it, too, which is unusual for a chic flick. Thanks for following us!
    I'll join you :)

  3. Funny I am going see it today...cannot wait! I love Woody Allen (at least professionally haha) and I am thinking its got a Midnight in Paris vibe which I loved and saw twice. Looking so forward........

  4. sister and her husband in Italy this week....I'll be satisfied to stay close to home and enjoy Rome via this movie with my husband

Thanks for the reminder that I need to schedule a date night soon!

  5. I'm with Carolyn...I loved Midnight in Paris, so I'm sure this will soon be a favorite of mine.

My favorite date night usually involves a delicious, special meal and live music!

    Wishing you a fabulous Friday!
    xoxo Elizabeth

  6. Can't wait to see it! I love Midnight in Paris. The Gatsby thing had me dreaming. That you for the recommendation.
    Have a great weekend, Jeanne.

  7. Thank you for the recommendation, Jeanne. Will try to catch the movie during our travels. Off tonight on our sailboat (let's hope the thunder and rain subside...) for a three week vaca. in the San Juan and Gulf Islands. Will be checking in on and off. Take care, Veronique (French Girl in Seattle) PS: Love Nancy's recommendation, above, as well. A Good Year is a cliche-ridden, but hilarious comedy! Loved Russel Crowe and beautiful Marion C. in it!

  8. I would love to see glimpses of one of the world's most beautiful city without the jetlag, and of course the gelato. :) Great suggestion! My husband and I have a kids-free week coming up so we'll be having lots of dates - can't wait!

  9. Jeanne, are these your photos? Just curious--they are lovely! I have only spent a few hours in Roma and would give anything to go back, so I'll look forward to seeing this...Woody knows how to give just the right touch of romance without going overboard.

Date night?! A very American concept I am afraid...Le sigh...

    Bon weekend!

  10. Hi Heather, Mr. H. took those lovely photos (I should have given him a credit!). We were in Rome in 2006 because a friend of ours was filming a documentary there. We loved it!

Perhaps you can take Remi out on a date night to teach him about the concept! :-)

    Happy Weekend, Jeanne

  11. loved midnight in paris so i'm sure i'll like this one.

    rome is on the list!

    happy weekend.
