Party Planning: Starting At The (Table) Top

I'm having a few friends over for dinner in a couple weeks, so it's time to get started on the party planning.  It might sound funny, but for me, what's on top of the table is always on top of my list--even before the menu.

The tone set by the table setting is the starting point for the whole evening. Elegant or eclectic. Matching or mixed up. Sometimes, if I have my heart set on using a certain set of vintage bowls, it means there must be soup on the menu... or risotto. Or if nothing but our wedding china will do, what gets dished up must be as refined as the dishes it's resting on.

This mixed up table of blue and white with autumn flowers is sparking my imagination -- and seems to call for a cozy evening and a relaxed and rustic fall feast! I'll let you know what takes shape...

Where do you start when planning a dinner at yours? Do you envision a table top? Or start with a recipe for a perfect evening of glorious flavors and seasonal dishes?

  1. Hello Jeanne ~ I usually start with the menu, maybe a single ingredient will inspire me. The table top usually comes later in my planning...

So great to visit last night, blogging, Barcelona, travel tips, Starbucks...a very enlightening and enjoyable evening!

  5. I think menu and then table. Often seasonal inspires and I usually always have something seasonal on the table. I love white, silver, wood and linen.
Candles really set the ambiance and company does the rest!
    Please show us your table.
Are you coming to NY again soon, love for you to be my dinner guest!
