Charmed By: Asta the Wire Hair Fox Terrier

Mr. H. and I don't have any "fur children" yet -- although we talk incessantly about taking the plunge. I grew up with wire haired fox terriers, and these photos of Asta (or Skippy), the stylish little sidekick, of Nick and Nora in The Thin Man movies make my heart melt.

Sure, Myna Lloyd and William Powell were elegant and witty in the films, but Asta stole the show.

Asta also took a star turn along side Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby,  and again matched wits with Grant in The Awful Truth.

Lassie may have had better manners, Toto was pretty darn cute, but Asta had all the charm--not to mention comedic timing!

My Illustration

What do you think, should we hide the shoes and find our Asta?

Who's your favorite furry film star?

  2. Oh you're preaching to the choir here - just LOVE Asta. And I never realized that it was same dog in Bringing Up Baby, one of my favorite films. The Thin Man series is one of my husband and my favorites - and Asta is certainly part of the appeal. And how adorable is your perfect illustration - really captures his rambunctious spirit!!

  3. Yes, yes, yes!!!! If you're inclined to have a "fur child", I assure you from one who recently took the plunge, they add so much to your life. And, your children's lives. My boys are gaga for Molly....and I love seeing them so happy with her. She and I, of course, are BFFs....but I won't tell them if you don't!

  4. Remember when Asta would drink champagne in a few of the Thin Man films? Funny! They are on cable TCM all the time. Memories. I always wanted to name a cocker spaniel "Asta." Most were already named when rescued from shelter. Who didn't love Toto, or Lassie? All of the movie-star-poochies are wonderful! Marcee ..... Illinois
