Queen For A Day

Like many aspiring artists, the roots of my pursuits can be traced back to the color crayons my Mother used to tote around in her handbag, so that they would be at the ready whenever we had a bit of downtime. I rewarded her with many a "masterpiece" in my favorite medium of crayon on restaurant placemat. A subject that I returned to again and again was The Queen.

I'm not sure where the fascination with HRH came from. My anglophile Grandmother perhaps? Or a trip to the Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C., where a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II hung quite prominently in the lobby? At any rate, I thought it would be fun this year to add an updated portrait to the pile of early works that Mom still has with a "Queen for the Day" themed Mother' Day card--although my Mom will always be Queen to me every day.

BTW, I have to say that the Queen's sunny yellow fashion choice was one of my favorite details from the Royal Wedding. It seemed to be such an optimistic statement and a sartorial testament to her happiness with the match. Or so I would like to think.

Hope all you Mom's out there had a lovely Mother's Day and that you received the royal treatment!

  1. Your illustration is so charming. And I agree - I thought the Queen looked lovely and optimistic!!

  2. I love your drawing - and her choice of bright yellow (which to me was a silent message of happiness) was brilliant!

I hope YOU were treated royally! I started the day with coffee in bed and got the sweetest handmade gifts from my boys.

Here's to a great, new week!
    xoxo Elizabeth

  3. What a beautiful illustration...loved the Queen's yellow!! Such a happy color ~

  4. I don't usually like yellow (or the Queen for that matter!), but I loved her yellow dresss and it was one of the highlights of the wedding for me too.

  5. Aww this is awesome. It would be great for a children's book. Especially one about the royal wedding ;)
