Pull Up A Stool

My dears, can I get your opinion on something? We are desperately in need of bar stools for our kitchen--we've lived in our home for almost three years, and I just can't seem to make a decision. And as I watched a few of the girls' shift uncomfortably on their Louboutins during cocktail hour while I put the finishing touches on dinner last weekend, I was reminded once again that it's past high time to pull the trigger and pull some stools up to our center island.

So, we have the classic and ubiquitous white kitchen, with a white tile back splash, dark wood floors and a stainless steel hood that's the focal point of the room. When we were making plans to move, I had my heart set on black windsor chairs just like these to add a little contrast to all the white.

But then I decided that I wanted to have a little French cafe thing going on in the breakfast nook, and realized that the Windsor chairs would totally clash.

Rattan bistro stools would be perfect, and I like the idea of something that has a back...

But then again, Mr. Hartmann isn't a huge rattan fan.

And something industrial might be a nice contrast to the little vintage French touches around the room.

The DSW Marais stool could be perfect. I like the idea of red, but don't think I could live with it.

The gunmetal gray would balance the stainless hood. But would they be comfortable?

Maybe something upholstered would invite guests to linger, or would be a more comfortable perch for morning coffee?

My friend and talented interior designer, Dana, suggested these benches. I do love the look, but how practical would they be to come and go from if more than one person was seated?

Decisions, decisions! Which do you prefer? What do you have in your home? Any resources you would suggest? Would love your help to spur me toward a decision.

Merci!

  1. Oh this is too funny. I had the same issue at my old house and you know what happened? We ended up moving before I decided!! I like all your picks - the problem is that there are too many choices. My all time favorite but essentially unaffordable are the ones from Soane (I wrote them up in the fall). I also love the Anne Morris ones that Victoria Hagan frequently uses. The DWR one I also had on my list but my husband didn't like. There is a very nice one at Ballard - the Marcello which might be a more practical solution than the benches (which I LOVE) that Dana suggested. Good luck - keep us posted!!

  2. Oh my, I went through this too. We had some old Palecheck woven barstools which were perfect, but they became completely worn out and had to be replaced. I finally bought the white wooden stool with the woven seats from Ballard Design. They are nicely made, sturdy and were a great price -- if I found something else I really loved I could just replace them.

I love the bench idea -- but I think it would be hard to get in and out of them. ebh
